Penile ulcers are open sores or lesions that develop on the skin of the penis. They can vary in size, shape, and severity, and may cause discomfort, pain, or concern for those affected. Understanding the underlying causes of penile ulcers is useful for effective management.

The most common cause is sexually transmitted infections. But there are many other possible causes. Some penile ulcers may heal on its own. Many people need treatment to prevent the symptoms from getting worse. With treatment they can avoid the complications and spread to others. With successful treatment, one can fully recover.

 

Unprotected sexual activity increases the risk of contracting these infections, emphasizing the importance of practicing safe sex and regular STI testing.

Symptoms of Penile Ulcers:

  • Pain or tenderness in the affected area
  • Redness, swelling, or inflammation around the ulcer
  • Presence of one or more open sores or lesions on the penis
  • Discharge or pus from the ulcer site
  • Itching or burning sensations
  • Difficulty urinating or discomfort during urination

1 Causes : Sexually transmitted

Herpes

Chancroid

Granuloma inguinale.

2 Causes : Non-Sexually transmitted

Cytomegalovirus – Herpes family virus – causing mononucleosis
Epstein-Barr virus causing mononucleosis
Influenza A virus causing flu
Varicella zoster causing chickenpox, shingles


Bacteria
Group A Streptococcus
Mycoplama pneumoania

3 Causes : Non Infectious

Non-infectious causes of penis ulcers can include allergic reactions or side effects of some medication. In rare cases, autoimmune diseases may also cause penis ulcers.

4 Causes : Injury

Penile ulcers can also result from physical trauma or injury to the genital area. Friction during sexual intercourse, vigorous masturbation, or accidents can damage the delicate skin of the penis, leading to ulcer formation.
